New Delhi: For the thousands left homeless in Bihar floods, Patna Junction railway station has become a relief camp of sorts. Most families made their way out of the remotest flood-hit areas only to find themselves marooned in the state capital, friendless, with nowhere to go or sleep.
All of them come with scary stories. “The situation back home is terrible. People are thirsting for water to drink,” says a victim from Saharsa, Mohammed Karim.
It's so crowded, there's hardly room for more and yet, each train brings more survivors, more stories. Dinesh Yadav, who came here from Madhepura, had to plead with rescuers to ferry his family to safety.
“They were only rescuing those in the water. I pleaded with them, saying I'm handicapped,” he says.
These accounts are a far cry from the promises made by the state administration. “Not everyone has relatives on whom they can rely. These people will need to be kept in relief camps for a long time to come,” Bihar CM Nitish Kumar said.
There's little here in the way of food, potable water or a bed. For now Patna station is the only roof above their heads.
