Patriotism lesson no fun for MP kids

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The Madhya Pradesh government in its latest order has directed all schools in the state to sing and dance only to patriotic songs.

If this order comes into effect, many students would end up performing only on patriotic numbers in school shows.

Says a Class 12 student, Meeta, "I love western numbers and at times western gels well with our classical music, but the decision to allow only dancing to patriotic songs is not right."

The Directorate of Education says the move is aimed at promoting social and cultural values among students. The Opposition Congress says the move is aimed at pleasing the saffron brigade - namely the RSS.

Says Congress leader, Manak Aggarwal, "The government should focus on education, which it is not doing. Instead it has a saffron agenda and is just working on that."

Madhya Pradesh has very little to cheer for when it comes to results in education. Success rate for Class 10 over the past five years has hovered around just 30 per cent and many feel orders like these can only serve in diverting attention from important issues.
