New Delhi: Credit users will have to register with their bank’s website from Saturday to continue using services. It’s a must, and it is not difficult. Here is what is to be done.
How difficult is registering?
Go to your bank's website and click on a link asking you to fill in your credit card details. Then choose a password you like. A secret question you set will be double protection against security breach. If you forget your password later, just type in the answer and you get a new password.
What if I don't register by August 1?
You can register yourself whenever you like, but till you register and till you get your new password, you can't pay your bills or shop online.
One extra password for my credit card!
Till now, entering your sixteen-digit credit card number, a three-digit CVV number and your card's expiry date were enough to shop online. The trouble is everyone can see those details. If somebody copies them, they could go on a shopping spree, behind your back.
Is the new password completely safe?
Since only you and your bank can see this new password, you're safer than you were before. But watch out - you can still lose your money! If a hacker diverts you to a site that looks exactly like your bank's, you'd just type in your password and kiss your protection away.
Caution again
The new password is necessary only for transactions on Indian sites, so fraudsters can still rip you off on foreign websites. Also, if your net connection is slow or snaps while you punch in your password online, you'll be forced to fill in your buying order all over again.
