New Delhi: Students of government medical colleges must serve in villages because they are paying “dismally low” fees, Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss has said.
"Any private medical college charges nearly Rs 2 lakh-3 Rs lakh each year for MBBS but in government hospitals the fees is dismally low. The government is heavily subsidising the education," he told PTI on Thursday.
The government is not asking much from medical students and many countries have two-three years of compulsory service in villages, said Ramadoss, who was commenting on a recent strike by medicos in at least three states.
"We don't know why the students are agitating as we have not yet made any such announcement (on compulsory rural service)." The government has no plan to increase the duration of the MBBS course and only one-year service in villages is being proposed.
Medical students would be paid a monthly stipend of Rs 8,000 and would work under the supervision of the District Medical Officer.
