Biometric scanners in Home Ministry

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Late comers at the Home Ministry beware. The Government has introduced 15 biometric scanners at offices in Delhi. And Home Minister P Chidambaram, who has a reputation for punctuality, promptly showed up at 0900 hours IST on the dot on Tuesday to place his finger on the scanning machine, kicking off this drive to improve efficiency among civil servants.

Taking cue from the Minister, hundreds lined up to register their attendance electronically by putting their index finger on the scanner.

Under this system, Home Ministry employees, irrespective of their rank, will to register their finger print twice everyday, once when they arrive for duty and then when they leave.

“All down to the last employee in the Home Ministry must put in eight hours of work (everyday). I can understand if someone comes in at 9.25 but that means that person must clock out only at 5.55 pm,” Chidambaram said.

But what about repeat offenders?

Three strikes and the employee will have to say goodbye to one day of casual leave. If the stick approach works, Chidambaram will earn credit for mending the ways of the notoriously late Indian babus.
