Chennai: It has been a rough week for Home Minister P Chidambaram for more reasons than one. He was forced to withdraw his controversial remarks on the Mullaperiyar Dam that raised temperatures in Kerala.

On Saturday, the Home Minister had termed the Kerala government's apprehension over the safety of the Mullaperiyar Dam as "unnecessary" and claimed it was borne out of "bypoll fear".

The remark by the Home Minister has now well and truly brought the Mullaperiyar Dam row up before the Union Cabinet as Chidambaram's fellow minister from Kerela Valayar Ravi takes up the cudgels for his home state Kerala.

Slamming the Home Minister, Ravi dubbed the statement by Chidambaram as 'politically immature'.

Valayar Ravi's reaction came even after Chidambaram withdrew his remarks on the Mullaperiyar Dam. In a statement issued early on Sunday morning, the Home Minister clarified, "Like some other speakers, I also made a passing reference to the forthcoming by-election. I take back that remark, that reference was not necessary and it was not my intention to hurt the feelings of anyone."

But politicians in Kerala cutting across party line weren't impressed.

For the people in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the Mullaperiyar Dam has become a point of contention and till an amicable solution is reached, politics over water will continue.
