Pushkar (Rajasthan): Hopes of lasting peace in the Gurjar heartland continue to hang in limbo as the community meets in Pushkar to decide their next step.
The Gurjars are holding a Mahapanchayat (mass meeting) in Pushkar on Friday, in the backdrop of the police registering murder charges against their leaders Colonel Kirori Singh Bainsla and Roop Singh.
They are to discuss the next step that they want to take in their agitation for reservation.
Talks with the state government earlier this week brought about a fragile truce, but many Gurjars are unhappy with the peace deal. The murder charges have only added fuel to the fire.
Says Secretary, Gurjar Sangharsh Committee, Roop Singh, "We took a decision, but then the circumstances were different. However, now the circumstances have changed and if need be we will bow out of the deal."
The state government is obviously worried about the Gurjar's restarting their protests. They say no action will be taken against Colonel Bainsla and other Gurjar leaders, without a thorough investigation.
Says state Information Minister, Bhawani Singh Rajawat, "We have assured the Gurjars that no arrest will be made before investigations are complete."
Colonel Bainsla is planning to meet Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje to discuss the case registered against him. Gurjar leaders say the outcome of that meeting could directly impact decisions taken at the Mahapanchayat.
Twenty-six people were killed in violence during the week-long Gurjar agitation that ended with an agreement with the government earlier this week.
