'People haven't really understood nuke deal'

CNN-IBN

London: Even with the Left threatening to pull the plug on the UPA, reports now suggest that the Government is likely to go ahead with the talks with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regarding the Indo-US deal.

The Government is expected to discuss India-specific safeguards with the nuclear watch-dog around mid-October.

Atomic Energy Commission Chief Anil Kakodkar is expected to be in Vienna on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, member of the House of Lords and leading NRI industrialist Swraj Paul has said that there is little clarity on the Indo-US nuke deal.

Speaking exclusively to CNN-IBN's Karan Thapar in London, Lord Paul also said that in case the deal falls through, India's image in the world won't be affected.

Here is an excerpt from the interview:

Swraj Paul: I don't think people have really understood what India wants out of this and what the US wants. If the idea is nuclear power, how much power is it going to generate as compared to the needs of the country? I think people don't really understand the deal and that what is it that the Prime Minister says he has no restrictions. The Opposition says you are signing away India to the US. Isn't it possible to clarify the issues without raising emotions?

Karan Thapar: If the deal falls through and the Government, under pressure from BJP and its allies on the Left, walks away from the deal, how will western investors and Governments look at India?

Swraj Paul: I don't think they are going to be bothered about that. In the nuclear deal, except for the people who are going to supply nuclear plants, no one would care.
