New Delhi: Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss’ statement that homosexuality should be legalised has found acceptance with many people, who feel that a change in this particular law is long overdue.

Speaking at the International AIDS conference in Mexico city on Thursday, the minister said, “Section 377 of IPC, which criminalises men who have sex with men, must go.”

Meanwhile, for the first time a statement made by him has found acceptance among a large group of people, who believe that it's high time that Indian society recognizes homosexuality as a reality...

“I think it's already too late. I don't think the law should have a problem if two adults want to have consensual sex,” says Lawyer/Activist, Mayur Suresh.

The same opinion is echoed by 54-year-old Sunil Gupta, a photographer who has no qualms about telling people he's gay.

“I don't think the state has to know what goes on in people's bedrooms,” says Sunil Gupta.

However, for Sunil's friend, coming out of the closet would become a lot easier if the legalities were done away with.

“My life as a gay would become much easier if law was not against homosexuality,” says he.

According to National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), there are about 2.5 million homosexual men in India and about one lakh are at risk of contracting HIV due to multiple partners.

Meanwhile, the queer community is seeing Ramadoss’ statement about legalizing homosexuality as a step in the right direction.

They are now hopeful that his words would be more than just an empty promise.
