New Delhi: A Supreme Court judge has withdrawn himself from hearing the multi-crore Ghaziabad Provident Fund scam.
Justice B N Aggarwal, who was heading the three-judge Bench hearing the case and is the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, withdrew from the hearing following an altercation with senior advocate Shanti Bhushan.
Shanti Bhushan, appearing for Delhi chapter of Transparency International, has been campaigning for a probe against the judges whose names figure in the scam.
Justice Aggarwal recused himself from the hearing after Shanti Bhushan said the Supreme Court was "protecting corrupt judical officials".
Twenty-six sitting judges of the Allahabad High Court as well as serving and retired judges of the apex court are accused of corruption in the PF scam.
The The lawsuit alleges that the judges were beneficiaries of fraudulent withdrawal of crores of rupees from the Ghaziabad district court's treasury in Uttar Pradesh.
Justice Aggarwal has referred the case to Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan for deciding the future course of action.
