Phalke awards honour Bollywood veterans

Mumbai: Away from all the glamour and star studded Bollywood Award shows, the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Awards were handed out in Mumbai on Monday. Veterans including actors Shammi Kapoor, Manoj Kumar and singer Shamshad Begum were some of the recipients of the prestigious awards this year.

Singer-composer-actor Himesh Reshammiya gave a special performance at the 30th Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Awards, celebrating the 140th birth anniversary of Dada Saheb Phalke. The reason - the awards honored his father veteran music director and producer Vipin Reshammiya and Himesh was visibly excited about it.

"I am really happy my father got this award, not because he is my father but because he deserved it," he said.

Bollywood's leading Kapoor families turned up for the event as veteran producer Surinder Kapoor was conferred with the LV Prasad Phalke Award while Prithviraj Kapoor was honored with the Phalke Kalpataru Award for his contribution to the film industry.

Actor Sanjay Kapoor said, "After 50, my father should get all the awards. This one is special and we are very proud of him."

Added actor Randhir Kapoor, "I am glad the academy gave my grandfather the Phalke award and more than that I want to thank Dada Phalke who gave us all what we do."

Amongst other recipients were filmmaker Ashutosh Gowarikar who was given the Phalke Memorable Commercial Film Award for his last film Jodhaa Akbar.

"One of the main factors of these awards is that it recognises technicians and also supports them," said Gowarikar while accepting the award.

The academy also felicitated singer Shamshad Begum and actor Shammi Kapoor with the Phalke Golden Singer Award and Phalke Legend Actor Award respectively.
