For the ninth time in a row Alex de Oliveira was chosen King Momo. Next to his beauty queen and two princesses, he declared open the Carnival.
As violence becomes a growing issue in Rio, officials have announced a tight security plan for the five days of Carnival. In Greek mythology, Momo was the god of delight and revelry.
Both the Fat King and the carnival princess' duties are to command over the spirit of carnival throughout the city of Rio de Janeiro.
