New Delhi: The Delhi Development Authority is planning a badminton stadium near the Siri Fort Sports Complex.
But the stadium for badminton and squash being built for the Commonwealth games will come at the cost of precious green cover and that is the reason why M L Lahoty, a senior Supreme Court Lawyer, has filed a PIL against the Rs 200 crore project.
“They are going to demolish our golf driving range and children's corner, and this will severely harm the lush green ambience of the place, and that too for an event which will last only for 15 days,” said Lahoty.
As per the DDA's plans, an access road will be constructed after demolishing a skating rink and a row of trees next to the golf driving range but it may be not needed.
“There is no need for constructing a third access road as there is already an access road within the complex,” said Congress Spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi.
It's not certain whether golfers will be able to swing their clubs for very long. Lahoty claims an underground parking will be built by demolishing this drive range.
DDA, however, offered no comments on this.
The DDA says that it will plant more trees and re establish all structures which were demolished in preparation for the Commonwealth Games but the big question is will they be able to bring back the original ambience of the place?
