PJ Thomas likely to challenge SC verdict

New Delhi: Tainted Central Vigilance Commissioner PJ Thomas is likely to challenge the Supreme Court's judgement striking down his appointment as the CVC.

His lawyer told CNN-IBN that Thomas may file a review petition after the apex court deemed his appointment as the head of India's anti-corruption watchdog illegal.

Speaking to CNN-IBN Thomas' lawyer Wills Mathews said that he has not resigned yet. "We are studying the judgement. He will decide only after reading the judgement whether to resign or not," said Mathews.

Meanwhile, sources said that the Law Ministry will issue a notification quashing the appointment of PJ Thomas as the CVC.

Sources in the Law Ministry also said that Thomas does not have to resign and that his recommendation as the CVC has been set aside by the court.

The Supreme Court on Thursday struck down PJ Thomas's appointment as Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC). The verdict raised serious questions on the Prime Minister and Home Minister's role in appointing Thomas.

Chargesheeted in the palmolein scam, Thomas was appointed by the Government in 2010 despite Opposition leader Sushma Swaraj's dissenting note.

Just six months after Thomas took oath as the country's top anti-corruption officer, he has been shown the exit door by the apex court. Quashing his appointment as CVC, the court called the Government recommendation as bad in the eye of law.
