New Delhi: You can hear it on the radio, read them on your phone or watch them clean up your neighbourhood park. The plastic lobby in the capital is leaving no litter unturned to promote the use of plastic bags, which they consider to be eco-friendly.
There are around 10 places in India including states like Himachal Pradesh that have successfully implemented the plastic ban and even though the plastic lobby here is not demanding to lift the ban, they are certainly acting against it.
Convener, plastic bag awareness forum (PBAF) Rajesh Mittal said, “Recycling plastic is good, it’s good for the environment.”
However, environmentalists are not buying that argument.
CSE, Kushal said, “Everytime you recycle plastic the quality deteriorates, the chemicals leech into your product making it hazardous to health.”
So what is the solution? Unable to get desired results with the recycle program, the Delhi government imposed a blanket ban on plastic bags. Plastic manufacturers however insist, it’s the only way out.
Rajesh Mittal said, “Govt says don’t use plastic bags, why government doesn’t say don’t litter.”
Chief minister Shiela Dikshit said, “What can I say about people who are trying to save their own face. I think they are the only one who are saying it is eco friendly.”
Plastic bags might be choking our cities, but for more than 2500 plastic manufacturers in the capital, saving them is literally saving their livelihoods.
