Music: Kabhie Alvida | St Elsewhere

Mumbai: It's got the star-power, the big banner and the publicity.

But what about the music of Kabhie Aalvida Naa Kehna, one of the most awaited movies of the year?

Here's a quick review:

After the music triumvirate of Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy struck gold with Kal Ho Na Ho, director Karan Johar decided to take no chances with the soundtrack to Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna.

And that's the problem with the soundtrack of this film - absolutely no chances have been taken.

For the producers of the film, a soundtrack like this is gold - just the right amount of pop and pathos.

The formula is on in this soundtrack, with representation of everything that works - the sad song, which also doubles as the title track, the clubby Where's the Party Tonight and the mandatory Punjabi dance track Rock 'n' Roll Soniye.

Overall, the soundtrack is complete with one of the most pained, deliberate guitar riffs.

Nothing stands out as something you may not have heard before.

Gnarls Barkley, St Elsewhere

Now for an international review. In the music biz, the producers are the guys who sit behind the console and weave their magic while the star takes away the Grammy.

But every once in a while, the producer moves out to cut an album of his own. Dr Dre is one, Gnarls Barkley is another.

His debut album, just released, is called St Elsewhere, and this is our review.

Don't feel completely silly if you haven't ever heard of Gnarls Barkley - he's one half of DJ duo producer Danger Mouse, the console wizards most recently responsible for Gorillaz' Demon Days.

Producers always make the best albums because of the depth of their knowledge of music, and it shows in this album as well.

The music shifts effortlessly from the old school hip-hop of Feng Shui to the Berry Gordy Motown of Smiley Faces, and even a cover of The Violent Femme's Gone Daddy Gone.

This album might not have a recognisable star, but the music is divine.

Go out and buy this one.
