New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh returned late on Tuesday night from his three-day visit to China, his first in the New Year.
On board the aircraft, the PM told journalists he remained hopeful that China would back India in the NSG on the nuclear deal.
“I cannot say that I got a firm, definite answer but my own feeling is that relationship of trust and confidence is now establishing and we are succeeding in that,” he said.
“When the issue comes before the relevant agencies. I don't think that China will be an obstacle,” he said, however adding that he couldn’t claim to have an assurance of the same.
India is resuming discussions with the IAEA on Wednesday on a safeguards agreement. India will be looking to break the deadlock reported in the talks last week.
The Prime Minister admitted slow progress on resolving the border issue with China.
“I cannot say at this stage whether this can be resolved in a few months. Progress has been made. Both President Hu Jintao and premier Wen assured me that they have the political will to make the necessary decision and we decided to instruct our special representatives to accelerate the search for a positive framework, which will resolve the issue,” he told journalists.
Commerce ministers from both sides will begin a dialogue on a regional trading arrangement and make recommendations.
The PM also said that India's adverse balance of trade was a matter of concern. He said that China was also complaining of barriers to direct investment in India.
