Yavatmal (Maharashtra): Cows provided to farmers in Vidarbha under the Prime Minister's and the Chief Minster's Relief Package are turning out be a burden instead of a boon.
The scheme, intended to provide alternative means of livelihood to farmers like 26-year-old Devidas Shriram, is now infact adding to the agrarian crisis in Maharahstra's suicide belt.
“This cow needs fodder worth Rs 50. It’s of no use,” says Devidas.
The story is the same even for Sheikh Mustafa too. The cow he got under the Chief Minister's relief package was also high on upkeep and low on milk therefore he sold it.
I used to spend Rs 50 on her and she’d give milk worth Rs 20. So I sold her,” says Mustafa.
To do a reality check CNN-IBN team followed the Government milk van that collects milk from the farmers who received cows under the multi crore packages and the scheme's failure clearly came to the fore.
“We distributed 110 cows in six villages. But we get only 100 to 125 litres of milk,” says government milk collector, Bau Rode.
But government officials’ don’t seem too concerned over this. Instead they are busy tightening the noose around farmers like Mustafa, who had to sell their cows.
“If animals in package is given to beneficiary and that is sold to another then we take very stern action and action is already being taken. So I think nobody will dare to that,” says Resident Collector, Yavatmal, Shivanand Mishra.
