New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, usually perceived to be a “mild” person, has this time given the Left parties “one tight slap” telling them in straight words, that they may withdraw support but the Nuclear deal with United States is not going for re-negotiation under any circumstances.

The Prime Minister has accused the Left of not keeping its word of backing the deal, despite him keeping the promises he made to Parliament, where he will now defend the deal on Monday. He's called the Left's bluff and dared it to withdraw support.

In fact, Left leaders are a bit taken aback by the strong words of the usually mild Dr Singh.

“I told them to do whatever they want to do, if they want to withdraw support, so be it. I am not angry but anguished. They are our colleagues and we have to work with them. But they also have to learn to work with us. They haven't thought it through,” said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The Left and opposition is gearing up to corner Singh over the nuke issue. But thing will not be easy because it’s a tough and adamant Prime Minister who will be making a statement in the House on Monday.

Frequently, the PM has had to change his decisions or put them on hold because of Left opposition. But the nuke deal is close to Dr Singh's heart and he will push this past the Left, knowing there is no real threat to his Government. Both he and Sonia Gandhi emphatically ruled out a mid-term poll.

“No such message has been sent by PM that he has threatened A or B party,” said Priyaranjan Das Munshi while trying to conceal the issue.

The Left is taken aback but will open their cards only after PM's speech on Monday. In private, they rule out any withdrawal of support. “We have asked the government not to proceed with making the deal operational,” CPI MP D Raja, said.

It’s a difficult situation for the Left. UNPA and BJP want voting on the issue, but the Left is not too keen on that. The party says it will abstain and this time around Manmohan Singh has emerged the winner for taking on the Left.
