New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Rajnath Singh has breached a new front against Manmohan Singh, calling the Prime Minister communal and accusing him of endangering amity.
Rajnath said this in an interview to CNN-IBN's Divyamanu Chaudhry while rejecting allegations that the BJP had made personal attacks against the PM.
“The Prime Minister himself indulged in personal attacks--his remark on L K Advani and Babri Masjid. Why did he not remember Babri Masjid in the last four and a half years? Now that it is election time, he is reminding the nation of Babri.
“What does he want to do? Communal polarisation? Vote-bank politics? This remark of his damaged has the reputation of his post.”
Rajnath claimed the Congress had promised to build the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya to get votes. “The same party had promised that they would get the Babri Masjid built. I want to ask the Congress have they fulfilled that promise? The PM’s comments on Babri Masjid are only vote-bank politics.”
Rajnath said people should trust BJP leader Varun Gandhi when he claims that he didn’t give a communal speech in Pilibhit and a video CD had been doctored to frame him.
“When I saw the CD on television, I immediately called him (Varun). He told me that the CD is doctored; that it was not his voice on the CD. If he is saying this, then I think we should believe him. This matter is still being investigated; let the investigation get completed.”
The BJP leader was confident that his party would emerge as the “single largest party” after the Lok Sabha elections in April-May and the National Democratic Alliance would come to power.
“Post our split with the BJD, three political parties have joined us: RLD, INLD and Asom Gana Parishad. The NDA’s power has increased. I am pretty confident that the BJP-led NDA will form the government”
Rajnath was confident that the NDA would manage to find new allies after elections if it didn’t get a majority in Parliament. “The NDA might not need post poll alliance. We believe the NDA will get full majority. In case we do need alliances, there are many parties ready to support NDA.”
The Congress rejected Rajnath’s allegations and said the country would never believe the BJP. “L K Advani, who is the proponent of hate politics and demolished the Babri Masjid should not call the PM communal who has done so well for the country on every front. Such comments will be ignored by the people,” said Congress spokesperson Aswini Kumar.
