PM meets states CMs to discuss rising prices

New Delhi: The war against price rise is intensifying with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh meeting the chief ministers of all states on Saturday to find a means of tackle the menace.

Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar has been getting the flak for rising prices of food items.

Congress Working Committee met on Friday to discuss price rise.

But as Prime Minister meets chief minister's from the states to discuss the issue; it could turn out into a Centre versus states battle on who exactly is responsible for rising prices.

Already there's a bitter political battle between the Congress and its rivals over the issue.

UP Chief Minister Mayawati has pulled out saying the meeting is useless till Sharad Pawar is removed.

Under fire the Agriculture Minister and the Central Government hopes to ask the states to lift the cereal stock under the open market scheme and to show interest in the government’s scheme for pulses under the PDS - a request that doesn't have too many takers.

Centre could also ask the states to remove value added tax on imported sugar and check price differential between wholesale and retail prices of essential commodities.

But will the states respond?

The question facing the country is will the states and the Central Government get past their political blame game and find a solution to an issue that's hurting every Indian citizen.
