Nagpur: The Prime Minister is visiting Vidarbha on Friday to review how farmers have benefited from the Rs 3,750 crore he gave last year to resolve the agrarian crisis in the region.

Here is news: some farmers have not even got Rs 350 as their cheques bounced. Sunita Lasankute, 26, was given a cheque but she says it’s just a scrap of paper because she didn’t get the money.

“I deposited the cheque but an officer said there was no money in the bank and returned it,” said Sunita.

It's the same hopeless situation for cotton farmers Bhavrao Ingole and Sukdev Meshram. Bhavrao received a paltry cheque of Rs 350 from the Prime Minister's fund but never saw the money as the cheque bounced due to insufficient funds.

“When I went to deposit the cheque, I was told that I was late. Then I got it renewed but that cheque bounced too,” says Ingole.

When CNN-IBN showed copies of bounced cheques and bank documents to the regional agriculture officer, he admitted errors had been made in granting money.

“Ingole didn’t deposit his cheque for six months. We renewed the cheque for him and we are investigating the matter,” said Ashok Gdrkandharkar, agriculture officer at Washim.

The roof over their heads is thinning for over 2000 farmers who are literally living on the brink of starvation for the last five years.

NGOs claim there have been 743 suicides in the region since Prime Minister announced the relief package in July 2006.

The Prime Minister has invested Rs 3,750 crore in Vidarba but it seems the money isn’t reaching all the people.
