Chennai: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday said that India will not bow to terror threats and push hard to isolate Pakistani terror organisations.

Inaugurating seventh edition of the two-day Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Chennai on Thursday, Manmohan Singh said that terrorists can never succeeding in destabilising India.

"The recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai were a grim reminder of a grave threat posed by extremism and terrorism to our pluralistic and liberal traditions. There are some who would not like to see India succeed," said Singh.

"We will not allow forces of extremism and terrorism to destabilise our polity and society. We have taken several measures to strengthen our national security and promote national cohesion. We will continue to world with the international community to ensure that there are no safe haven and launching pads for terrorists," he said.

Assuring the conclave of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO), Singh said that despite the global slowdown and recession in major economies, the fundamentals of the Indian economy were very strong and that it was expected to grow at seven per cent in the current year.

"We expect to achieve a growth rate of about seven per cent this year which will be among the highest in the world," said the Prime Minister.

He also reiterated Indian's support for the Palestine cause and asked the

"India has strongly condemned this incident and it is our hope that international community would get together and help restore in the peace in the region as soon as possible. I wish to reiterate our unstinted and unwavering support for the just Palestinian cause," he said.

Singh also announced that doctors, dentists, pharmacists, engineers, architects and chartered accountants, possessing the overseas citizenship cards issued by India, would be allowed to practice in the country.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is being held under heavy security cover following terror threat and around 1,500 delegates from over 40 countries are participating in the event.

The event assumes significance since it is the first major international event to be held in the country since the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.

The Divas is aimed at connecting the 25 million Indians of the Diaspora with India's economic and social development.

President Pratibha Patil will give away the Pravasi Bharatiya Sammaan Awards at the valedictory session on January 9.

The convention is being organised by the Union Ministry of Overseas Indians, the Tamil Nadu government and the Confederation of Indian Industries.
