New Delhi: The Prime Minister has made several statements on his Africa trip to to indicate that the Indo-US nuclear deal is not dead.
And South African President Thabo Mbeki has now given a further boost to reports India is taking the deal negotiations further and conducting talks to the Nuclear Suppliers Group.
Mbeki was speaking in Pretoria at the India-Brazil-South Africa summit. Brazil and South Africa are key members of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) and India has been briefing them regularly at various stages of the nuclear deal.
They were known to have had reservations about the agreement but later came on board.
Now President Mbeki's comment suggests the UPA maybe going ahead with the agreement even as it engages with the Left over its objections.
"The NSG as you would be aware, has been discussing the particular matter that you have raised. So it is well in progress and indeed the discussions are taking place certainly between ourselves as you know we are currently chairing that group and India been having very good discussions to address all matters so it's work in progress," Mbeki said.
