New Delhi: Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in a letter addressed to the Prime Minister has stated that it was the Prime Minister's Office which insisted on Home Minister P Chidambaram's name being included in the controversial note 2G note.
Pranab has also written that the Cabinet Secretariat was in the know about the controversial finance ministry note on the 2G spectrum allocation.
He further said that the note was issued at the PMO's insistence even though the Department of Economic Affairs was opposed to it.
The 2G note drafted by the Finance Ministry had said that Chidambaram could have prevented the scam by insisting on auction of the spectrum.
In a two page letter addressed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh earlier Pranab stated, "After it was highlighted that Chidambaram was of the view that he had advocated auction for 2G spectrum allocation, an exercise was initiated at the Cabinet Secretary's behest beginning January, 2011 to evolve a harmonised position on the issues related to the allocation and pricing of the 2G spectrum."
The BJP, meanwhile, has demanded Chidambaram's resignation over the 2G scam.
"Additional secretary's letter has proved that RTI note on 2G scam was a stance taken by Finance Ministry. And, Chidambaram has no moral right to hold his office. He must resign," said BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain.
"Chidambaram is directly involved in the scam, its proven several times. Prime Minister should not protect him and take action against him, if he doesn't the country will not believe his intention against corruption," Hussain added.
