New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's coronary heart bypass surgery on Saturday afternoon has ended successfully.+

Doctors described the surgery as “successful”, and the Prime Minister's condition as “stable” after the marathon bypass surgery.

The 11-member team from the Asian Heart Institute (AHI) and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) led by Dr Ramakant Panda began the marathon operation at 0715 hrs IST which finally ended at about 1600 hrs IST.

Manmohan Singh has been taken into the Intensive Care Unit where he will be kept under observation and post operative care. He is likely to regain consciousness in three-four hours.

The team which operated upon the Prime Minister said that he will take about six to eight weeks to recover fully and resume work.

Dr Panda and his team had flown down from Mumbai on Friday night for the surgery on the 76-year-old Prime Minister.

The first graft was performed on Manmohan at about 1510 hrs IST and after that two similar procedures were carried out, said Dr Sudhir Vaishnav, cardio-vascular thoracic surgeon with the AHI, Mumbai.

The first graft was performed nearly eight hours after the operation began on Saturday morning at 0715 hrs IST.

The operating team of doctors was supported by a team of doctors and technical staff drawn from other departments of AIIMS.

A press briefing on Manmohan Singh's health condition will take place at 1800 hrs IST on Saturday.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was wheeled into the operation theatre at 0530 hrs IST.

Heart bypass that the Prime Minister had undergone 18 years ago in London, involves grafting of veins or arteries from elsewhere in the patient's body to the coronary arteries to bypass atherosclerotic narrowings and improve the blood supply to the coronary circulation supplying the heart muscle.

Six years ago, Singh had also undergone an angioplasty.
