Atlanta: Watching Angela Edwards climb a 16-foot dance pole, nobody would ever guess that she was once a labour and delivery nurse.
She started teaching pole dancing two years ago and now has 400 women who take classes at her Atlanta studio.
“We get preachers’ wives, teachers, nurses, accountants, lawyers — basically, anyone between the age of eight and 70,” Angela says.
Irrespective of their age or level, the dancers warm up with Pilates stretches and then put on their stilettos and strut their stuff.
The dancers burn calories and work up quite a sweat doing moves such as the ‘fireman spin’ and ‘chair spin’.
Kimberly Wright, a mother of two, recently joined the classes to stay in shape.
“It works the abs… and, oh my goodness, muscles that I didn't even know that I had,” Kimberly says. “I started last August and I've gone down two dress sizes. I've lost 20 pounds,” she adds.
Losing weight and gaining confidence, Edwards says the dancing makes women feel good.
“It makes you feel sensual and sexy,” Angela says. Well, in six-inch-high heels, sure you do!
