Khejuri, West Bengal The police in Khejuri have virtually been been under arrest for over 37 hours. They are now facing social boycott from the locals as well.
This, after they arrested 14 Trinamool Congress supporters on charges of rioting and vandalism on Congress Party of India (Marxist)'s (CPI-M) properties.
The police's food supply from local eateries has been snapped, local drivers of their vehicles withdrawn and constables denied a chance to take a bath at local ponds.
"Our jawans are not allowed to take the bus to go home on their leave. It's the same situation regarding other camps as well," said SDPO, Contai, Bhaskar Mukherjee.
The helplessness of the police and administration is perhaps more acute in the Maoist-dominated area of Lalgarh, where suspected Maoist guerrillas have gunned down at least three CPI-M supporters in the past two days.
The role of the law enforcers has hardly been more than mute spectators. Several others are missing from the area without trace.
The violence in the CPI-M stronghold of Dharampur over the past three days has converted the region into a liberated zone for the ultra Left guerrillas.
Ignoring the imposed section, 144 angry tribals have ransacked empty police camps and have set ablaze a deserted police outpost. Alleging complete collapse of the law and order, the Congress and Trinamool met the Bengal governor separately to register their complaint.
"In some districts there is unrest due to state-sponsored terrorism carried out by CPM government," said Trinamool Chief Mamata Banerjee.
Even as reports of political clashes keep pouring in from elsewhere in the state as well only a quick police action free of political considerations could save it from further embarrassment.
