New Delhi: Security forces have stumbled upon a huge cache of arms and ammunition during raids on Naxal hideouts in Bihar and Jharkhand.

The administration now worries if the Naxals will re-unite to target the upcoming Assembly elections in the two states, hiding their activities under the pretext of working for the Left parties.

The Naxal cadres in Bihar and Jharkhand are unifying their strength, suggest reports.

Lal Salaam or the traditional Communist salute has become the order of the day as two separated factions of Naxals reunite in the jungles.

"It is a joyous day for us," said a Naxal who did not want to be identified. "It is today that the split that had happened five years ago has been bridged," he added.

This unification has become even more important in wake of Patna police's crackdown on their arsenal.

  • On November 7, the police recovered 400 kgs of explosives from Patna
  • The very next day, police recovered 14 carbines, 8000 cartridges, 50 landmine detonators and 600 kgs of explosive
  • On November 10, the police raided a Naxal hideout at Bokaro in Jharkhand
  • Police seized four AK -47 rifles, three hand grenades and 36,000 cartridges
  • On November 13, it recovered 500 kg of explosives from Gaya
  • On November 14, the same team seized three Inshah rifles, hand grenades, land mine detonators and 2000 cartridges
  • On November 15, police raided a Naxal hideout at Munger in Bihar
  • Police recovered 145 detonators and huge quantity of explosives and hand grenades

The series of seizures of arms, ammunition and explosives showed that it was ammunition meant for devastating the Jharkhand elections.

The seizures have come as a big blow to the Naxals. But since the Naxal organisations are trying to step up might, security agencies will still have their hands full till the elections are actually over.

SSP of Patna, Vineet Vinayak said, " It was to be used for the Jharkhand election. It was also meant for other places, where these people are trying to indulge in all kind of activities. Their activities were aimed at improving and increasing their impact as against the law enforcement agency."

Taken aback by this crackdown, the Naxal cadres are making efforts to keep the moral of their cadres high.

A Naxal leader, who did not want to be named, said, "The police can keep on making attacks and even bring the Cobra police. Our battalions are ready. We will put up a fight as these police actions are against people's welfare. Our cadres care for the villagers and their problems."

Clearly, the police and administration have a tough job laid out ahead.
