Rajbir murder theory fails to answer question

New Delhi: The death of encounter specialist ACP Rajbir Singh is throwing open more questions.

The bullet-riddled body of one of India's top encounter specialists defies the police theory that an ordinary property dealer could shoot and kill ACP Rajbir Singh, a veteran of over 56 encounters. The police say the murder was the fallout of a financial dispute.

“Total amount as per statement of the accused was 95 lakhs,” announced Commissioner of Police (Gurgaon), Manjit Singh Ahlawat.

The man allegedly responsible for the killing is in police custody but the underworld has now stepped in claiming responsibility.

The police have taken Bhardwaj's servant Krishna into custody and claim there was no third person at the spot, which leaves some unanswered questions:

  • How could a small-time property dealer murder an influential man who was behind 56 encounters?
  • Given that Rajbir Singh was given Z Plus security cover, where were his PSOs?
  • Why have the police not questioned those who Vijay Bhardwaj had called up after the murder?
  • Why had Rajbir given a .32 bore revolver to the accused?
  • Did the murder take place over a disputed property or was it a pre-planned hit?
  • Why did a mafia don from Uttarakhand, Bunty Pandey, presently based in Vietnam, call up a local TV channel and claim responsibility for the killing?
  • The police had earlier maintained that three shots were fired which they changed to two shots on Wednesday. Similarly, the disputed amount of money also changed from Rs 65 lakhs to Rs 95 lakhs.

While the police have rubbished the theory of underworld connections to the murder, they have no explanation as to why wanted don Bunty Pandey is claiming responsibility for the killing.

The Delhi Police, too, are conducting a parallel investigation into the murder but so far neither the Delhi police nor the Gurgaon police have any answer to these questions, particularly the potentially embarrassing issue of the involvement of land mafia.
