Mumbai: In Maharashtra a little boy has an unusual family to look after him. His family now are the police officials at a jail where his parents are serving their terms.
Four-year-old Sagar gets ready for school. It's a normal school day but the home Sagar leaves and comes back to everyday is the women's ward of the Central Jail in Akola.
Sagar's parents and grandmother were convicted of dowry harassment in 2003. With no one to look after him, Sagar had to be brought to jail as well. Four years on fellow inmates and officers are helping bring Sagar up.
Akola central jail jailer B K Vhise says, “We thought of enrolling him in school, and we even spoke to the chief. But he said we'd have to pay Rs 1,400 as donation. The workers and officers then contributed and we managed to get enough money to pay the donation and get him admitted.”
Police officials are very fond of Sagar. The boy's parents say they couldn't have hoped for more in these circumstances.
Sagar's father Santosh Khadse say, “Even if I was free, I wouldn't have been able to do as much as these people have done for Sagar.”
Sagar's mother Panchfula Khadse says, “The jail authorities take him to school and bring him back, the jail madam teaches him.”
Sagar's family will walk free in another three years and the child will start a new life outside this jail. But the police here have made sure that at least for one little boy, khaki won't be a colour to fear.
