J-Police use phone recordings to make arrests

Srinagr: Then protests over the Amarnath row rocked the valley some Kashmiri protestors were busy chronicling the events.

Everyday, a Kashmiri youth would film demonstrations and clashes between protestors and police on his cell phone. The videos were then posted on the net to garner support for the Kashmiri cause.

``We used the mobile phones to record history and to ensure the whole of the world sees what was happening the national and internal media did not help but we found ways to inform the world'', says Kashmiri youth, Ashraf.

Not to be outdone in the propaganda game, the police too had sent sleuths into the melee armed with small cameras. Now all this video graphic evidence is helping them identify those who instigated violence.

The police is now also making more arrests of protestors who turned violent in the last round of clashes over the Amarnath land transfer.

``If they have used technology we too have done the same to identify them,'” says SSP, Srinagar, A Mujtaba.

So far, the cops have rounded up scores of people who led the demonstrations. Many have been detained under the Public Safety Act.

The new groups of restive citizen journalists may have succeed in circulating some of most amazing footage on the cyberspace but the same technology is now proving counter-productive for many protestors among them.
