New Delhi: She's a businesswoman based in New York but Pratima Mahajan keeps visiting her home in New Delhi for court hearings.
The trial began after the domestic help murdered two members of her family.
"My mother-in-law and sister-in-law were both murdered two years ago by four domestic servants," she recalls.
The gruesome experience in 2006 has put her on guard. So, when she recruited a driver some months ago, she got him registered with the local police station. And Pratima did the right thing, say the Delhi Police.
PRO, Delhi Police, Rajan Bhagat says, "Anybody who has access to the house and who can harm family members need be verified."
On Monday, the Delhi Police launched a servant verification drive, appealing to and in some areas, personally approaching residents. The drive follows a string of robberies in the capital, allegedly by servants.
Many of us rely on the recommendations of our friends and neighbours when it comes to recruiting drivers. But what is it that makes a police verification a degree safer than a police enquiry?
The local police station will know if the driver or a servant has had a criminal record. They will also have fingerprints and photographs which will make tracking him down easier if anything goes wrong.
