Police wake up after Bandra mishap

CNN-IBN

Mumbai: With growing risks of speeding drivers crashing into people sleeping on pavements, the Mumbai police are now keeping a strict vigil on the traffic movement across the city.

"We have booked some people for rash driving and driving without a license," said Senior Police Inspector at Khar Police Station Satish Sinde.

The police intend to keep a tighter check on vehicles flouting speed limits, and to crackdown on those suspected of being driven by drunk drivers.

"With the help of breath analyzer we check people if they are drunk or not. If found guilty we straight away sent them to police station," said Traffic Inspector Arvind Shinde.

Two nights after a car crashed into roadside shanties in Bandra killing seven people, the Mumbai Police is taking no more chances.

"On humanitarian grounds we are requesting people not to sleep on pavements at dangerous turning points of the roads," said Police Inspector at Mahim Police Station Vinod Shinde.

Late on Tuesday night the police barricaded parts of Carter Road, where the accident took place, and conducted spot-checks on vehicles.
