Yogendra Yadav's take on Cong-Maya war

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: CNN-IBN asked political anylyst Yogendra Yadav - who has followed Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati's rise to power and the state's vendetta politics - how he sees battleground Uttar Pradesh in 2011.

He said, "There is no doubt that the statement by Rita Bahuguna Joshi is insensitive, it's crass, it's politically incorrect and it's very poorly timed, but I'm not sure if the statement is anti-Dalit in any clear way. Unfortunately in Uttar Pradesh, most politicians don't know how to be on the offensive politically without being vulgar personally."

The Congress's initial reaction was to blame Mayawati for vandalising Rita Bahuguna Joshi's house, but slowly they started becoming a little cautious. Does the Congress have reason to be scared of Mayawati politically?

To this Yogendra Yadav said, "Remember, they are both fighting for the same political turf. Uttar Pradesh is very keenly poised right now. Much of the war of words that we see has its roots in what happened two months ago in the election and what may happen two years later in the Assembly elections due in the state in 2011."

The 2011 Assembly elections are not very far away, so does Mayawati have reason to be worried from the Congress? Why is she fighting like this?

Yogendra Yadav said, "Mayawati is politically cornered. Her sarvajan samaj message has stopped bringing her dividends after a point. This is where she needs to resurrect the Dalit card. She needs to remind people of who she is, she needs to underline how precarious her honour is in the absence of their support and I suspect a lot of political drama ensues from that."
