Blame game over Mumbai attacks begins

New Delhi: Politics over the terror attacks in Mumbai has started. A day after the BJP sought to stand united with the Government on the terror issue, the BJP has now done a U-turn.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi hit out at the Centre on Friday, saying the PM's speech was disappointing.

"For the first time, Pakistan has used the sea route. It has been the reason for terror attacks. Earlier they took our fishermen, now they're taking our boats. They put the fishermen in jail and used our boats for all the wrong reasons against us. I was afraid of this happening," Modi said.

"The country had a lot of expectation from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's speech Thursday in such a time of crisis. However, the speech did not have much to offer," he added.

Meanwhile, the Congress has reacted to Modi's charge.

Congress Spokesperson, Manish Tewary said, "The last thing the country expects from their politicians is to squabble like little children. If the reports coming in are correct, then the boats which were used to attack Mumbai actually eminated from Porbandar and then the Gujarat government will have a lot to answer for as to what it is doing for the internal security of the country."

Modi arrived in Mumbai on Friday to pay his last respects to senior police officers killed while fighting the terrorists who attacked India's financial capital.

"I have come here to pay my respects to the brave and patriotic police officers and security men who laid down their lives fighting the terrorists. My government will provide compensation of Rs 1 crore for all their families," Modi told mediapersons.

He met the families of encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar and ACP Ashok Kamte in Mumbai.

Although he wanted to meet the family of Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief Hemant Karkare, who was also killed in the operations Wednesday night, Modi said he could not meet them since they were in Pune.

Karkare, Salaskar and Kamte were amongst the policemen killed in the line of duty when terrorists attacked 10 places in the city on Wednesday night.

The three were killed while leading operations against the terrorists at Cama hospital. Fourteen police personnel have been killed in the attacks, in which 327 people have been injured.
