Political parties move to firm up alliances

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: As Lok Sabha elections enter the final phase, political parties are trying to stitch up alliances.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and prime ministerial candidate L K Advani on Friday for the first time reached out to Bhaujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati.

The BJP needs Mayawati and All India Anna Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (AIADMK) chief J Jayalalithaa by its side to form a National Demotic Alliance (NDA) government.

Advani has admitted that BJP functionaries are in touch with Jayalalithaa. Now, he has offered a hand of friendship to the more unpredictable Mayawati.

"Constitution doesn't give any right to the Central Government to remove a democratically elected state government. So I was surprised at this public statement," Advani said in Bhopal while reacting to Samajwadi Party President Mulayam Singh Yadav's statement on Thursday that Mayawati's government must be sacked as a precondition for lending support to the United Progressive Alliance (UPA).

"We will support the party which will dismiss this government," Mulayam had said.

So sensing that Mayawati may need reassurance from friendly political parties, Advani lashed out at Mulayam's undemocratic demand.

Advani's reaching out to Mayawati was not the only attempt at securing allies. Communist Party of India-Marxist general Secretary Prakash Karat was in Bhubaneswar to extract a promise of friendship from Biju Janata Dal supremo and Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

Our assessment is that the non-Congress, non-BJP... the combination that we have forged is poised, well poised to form a non-Congress, non-BJP government," claimed Prakash Karat.

Meanwhile, in an exclusive interview to IBN7, Mulayam Singh Yadav agreed that he would have to possibly patch up with the UPA.

"Our relationship with the Congress is not bad," said Mulayam.

So it is clear that lonesome warriors are regrouping after the polls.
