Politicians, journos discuss paid content

New Delhi: The issue of paid content passing off as news and misleading the general public came to prominence during elections.

It was hotly debated by politicians at a seminar held by the Editors Guild.

General Secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist) Prakash Karat says, “Paid news should be declared as Electoral malpractice.”

BJP leader Sushma Swaraj says, “Representation of people’s act mein amendment karke paid news ko malpractice banaya jaye (Representation of people’s act needs to be amended to make paid new as malpractice).”

Despite the public uproar, no formal complaint has been made so far. The Election Commission says, till then, nothing much can be done.

S Y Qureshi appointed new Election Commissioner says, “We are lions for just 30-35 days, paid news is a larger phenomenon, complaint made in a drawing room conversation is not a complaint. It has to come in written.

The media too admits there is need for self regulation.

CNN-IBN Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesa said that Editors and proprietors should agree to a minimum regulatory framework.

"A minimum agreement between editors and proprietors as to what constitutes paid news and how do you regulate it should be there," said Sardesai.

However, the politicians say the self regulation isn't enough. They plan to push for a legislation on paid news when the issue is discussed in Parliament soon.
