Politicians vie for Jet reinstatement pie

New Delhi: With Jet Airways reinstating its retrenched employees, politicians are hogging the limelight to take credit for the employees’ reinstatement.

Within hours of Jet employees joining work, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said it was his call to Jet Airways' chairman Naresh Goyal which worked out in favour of the employees.

Patel said that he had called Naresh Goyal on Thursday morning to meet him Hyderabad and upon meeting with him, he had got Goyal’s assurance that within 24 hours a resolution to this problem would be sought.

Patel, a Maharshtra politician had a reason to make that urgent call because back in Mumbai there was heated protests against the dismissal.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Chief Raj Thackeray too while taking credit went a step further and has demanded that more Marathis should find place in the organisation.

It was the timing of the dismissal which got politicians worried while some saw a chance to play politics.

Before Diwali and in an election year, the opposition got a handle to attack the government, blaming it for mismanagement.

The fact that reinstatement happened just hours before Parliament resumed is also not a coincidence.

Under attack for inflation, the UPA leadership was keen that a quick solution was found to the mess.

Following Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi's urging, Praful Patel and Labour Minister Oscar Fernandes swung into action.

Recession can be a good time for politics, hence it is little wonder that the politicians are rushing in. However, no one is willing to put their heads together to find a lasting solution.

Praful Patel has put the ball in the court of Petroleum Minister Murli Deora and Finance minister P Chidmabaram, asking for rational taxes and cut in aviation turbine fuel.

With both Chidambaram and Deora reluctant, the PM -Sonia duo are aware that they may have to step in once again. After all it is their aam aadmi claim which is under the scanner once again with the opposition watching.
