Shivaji Park in Mumbai is gearing up for the Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s rally on December 23. Here she will kickstart the campaign for Mumbai Civic elections.
On the other hand BJP too has roped in national leaders like Rajnath Singh and Narendra Modi to campaign for the upcoming civic elections.
But what is so important about the BMC that senior leaders are jet setting into Mumbai – after all the BMC is just another civic body.
Mumbai Regional Congress Committee President Gurudas Kamat said: “For Mumbai Municipal Corporation the budget itself is bigger than 8 to 9 states. "
It’s not just the money that is moving the major parties.
Loksatta Editor Kumar Ketkar said: “The city that sets the economic, commercial or financial tone of the country is not governed by the state government, not central government but its governance is in the hands of the municipal corporation.”
"It’s not just a mere election. Mumbai is Mumbai, it’s not only the commercial capital but it also welcomes people from all across the country," Kamat added.
So while it will be Sonia Gandhi for the Congress, the BJP's star campaigners Rajnath Singh and Narendra Modi could be addressing as many as six rallies in Mumbai in the coming month.
