New Delhi: BJP leader Varun Gandhi has got bail for the two alleged hate speeches case against him but he isn’t going home anytime soon.

Varun will continue to be in jail because of his detention under the National Security Act.

The streets of Pilibhit witnessed mob frenzy, especially around the district court as Varun Gandhi courted arrest.

Forty eight hours later, it’s a completely different sight, with far fewer people with a heavy security deployment.

Pilibhit on Monday was a mini fortress, twelve hours after the UP government slapped NSA against Varun.

“I feel that the administration has come under some pressure,” said Varun Gandhi’s mother Maneka Gandhi.

But Varun's fate has been sealed, at least for the next three weeks. Under the provisions of the NSA, a three member advisory committee, including one sitting judge and two retired judges, will now give a report whether NSA imposed on Varun is right or wrong.

So though Varun has been granted bail in the inflammatory speeches cases, it means little as of now. Relatives have been trying to reach out to Varun and prepare him for a longer haul inside.

“I would like everybody to reconsider the hysteria and the paranoia being generated around one person who has been targeted so viciously,” said Varun’s aunt and Maneka Gandhi’s sister Ambika Shukla.

The worse yet news for the Varun Gandhi supporters was the government’s decision to shift him to Bareilly jail which is seventy kilometers from Pilibhit, his constituency.

This ensures that the young Gandhi will not be able to campaign anywhere for the BJP.

Varun’s lawyer, Ajay Kumar Saxena said, “The bail amounts prescribed by the court in both the Kothwali and Barkhera cases, amounting to Rs 20,000 each have been paid up. There was a personal bond to be furnished alongside the amount. There is no third case against him, at least as of now.”

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) combine however has decided to keep the pot simmering for Varun.

The saffron brigade has called for a bandh in Pilibhit on Wednesday.
