New Delhi: With every state election, the Opposition seems to be assuming more power, but now with a year left to go for the General Elections, the Manmohan Singh government is already turning into a lame duck.

“Manmohan Singh is a good Prime Minister, an able administrator but the only problem is that he is not a good leader of his party,” SP leader Amar Singh said.

The Karnataka defeat may mean the end of the Indo-US nuclear deal, at least, for now.

In three days' time the UPA-Left nuclear panel is to meet. The UPA was expected to talk tough, even inform the Left it needed to ink an agreement with the IAEA, but the bad news from Bangalore means the Centre will bury the deal. It cannot afford a General Election now with the present political scenario. Already, the Left has begun blaming for Government's economic policies.

“The discontent is arising out of their (UPA) own policies. They have to do a serious rethinking about it and that is exactly what we have been telling them to do, “ CPM leader Sitaram Yechury said.

So, it's not just farmer's loan waiver going up to Rs 71,000 crore, a subsidy regime is expected to hold this Government hostage in the coming months.

Even if the oil prices have surpassed $135 dollars per barrel, the Government will hesitate fueling ally outrage by taking tough economic decisions.

However, some of the partners are sympathetic. “Their are things which are beyond our control. If you look at the index of the price rise then India is in a far better situation,” NCP General Secretary DP Tripathi said.

It also seems that it’s time to forget about pursuing controversial legislation like Women's Reservation Bill or forcing the DMK to accept a compromise on Ram Setu, this Government’s is in for troubled times.

The UPA Government had gone into election mode 16 months before the scheduled date of polls, but nothing seems to working for it. So, expect tough decisions to be on hold for the next several months.
