Musharraf loses elections

New Delhi: Pakistan Muslim League chief Nawaz Sharif and co-chairperson of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), Asif Zardari glided to victory as counting entered its last rounds.

Pakistanis celebrated a historic election, one that brought to an end eight years of military backed rule.

The results threw up several surprises, as there was no rigging and the king's party lost.

There was sympathy for Zardari but no sweeping vote and the Islamist parties were wiped out even in the conservative tribal areas.

For now, all eyes are now on this man and his one time archrival's husband.

“All unconstitutional steps by President Musharraf will have to be taken back. We are meeting Zardari in Islamabad on Thursday and we will discuss all options not ruling impeachment proceedings against Musharraf,” says Sharif.

The President won’t be impeached unless the PPP and PML-N get a two-third majority.

But Musharraf will certainly be uncomfortable with the grand coalition especially if it decides to clip his wings. For example amending the Constitution and taking away the President's powers to dismiss an elected government.

But Musharraf also knows that he is what unites the PPP and Muslim league and running a government as opposed to forming it.

It will be more difficult for these one-time foes. They, after all, still differ on many issues like the restoration of judges, A Q Khan and Lal Masjid.
