Kolkata: The ban on wall graffiti and posters may have made canvassing for votes difficult, but the Election Commission's restrictions have unwittingly helped Mithun Chakraborty's new film.
Posters of the Bengali film, MLA Fatakeshto, have been designed to resemble political promo material creating quite a buzz in the city.
With the Election Commission banning posters and wall graffiti this year, the producers of this film couldn't have found a better way to promote it.
A make-belief potboiler, the film has grossed over a crore in a week. And even the producer of MLA Fatakeshto, who staked Rs 2.5 crore on it, admits the campaign has done miracles.
"This campaign really worked. People thought that this is a film about elections and they decided to watch it before the elections," producer of Shree Venkatesh films, Mahindra Soni said.
Mithun’s character is on the lines of Robinhood in this film — a political goon who turns a reformer after he becomes a cabinet minister.
Though this plain and predictable story might not have appealed to an urban audience, in poll-charged Bengal it's doing roaring business in Kolkata as well as the districts.
