Chennai: Rice, jaggery and dal boils over-a metaphor for joy and happiness spilling over in life as well. On the day of thanksgiving, people across Tamil Nadu offered prayers to the Sun God for a generous harvest.

But festivities do not end there-Thursday is Mattu Pongal' the big day when bulls charge and the crowds cheer-the day of Jallikattu. On this day, cows are decorated and worshipped-- as a symbol of gratitude-for aiding man in reaping the harvest.

Spread over 4 days, Pongal is a celebration of life and prosperity-a day when man thanks nature for it's bounty.

Meanwhile, Thousands converged at the ancient Sri Gavi Gangadheshwara temple in Bangalore to witness a rare sight on the Makar Sankranti day.

A ray of light passes precisely passed through the horns of the idol of Nandi bull and illuminated deity Shiva Linga. Sri Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple is a natural monolith carved cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.
