Mendhar, Poonch: After eight consecutive days, the operation in the Mendhar area of Poonch was called off unsuccessfully late on Thursday night.
Apart from an unsuccessful operation with 350 security men, a three-tier cordon and constant aerial surveillance, some glaring discrepancies stood out.
No bodies of the four militants that the army claimed had been killed, were found.
The army also admits that some might have made use of the terrain and weather and escaped the cordon.
All through, the army and the police contradicted each other over the number of militants, their position and how well-equipped they were.
Meanwhile, the army busted another militant hideout on Thursday. And it says search operations will continue for telltale signs of terrorists in the area where top Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) commander Abu Dawood and and Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) commander Saifulla Kairi are believed to have been operating for many months.
DIG Kamal Saini said, "We are concentrating on thorough search. Let us search out the whole area thoroughly, no matter how long it takes, we will scan the whole area."
At the end of the 8 day gun battle, the army has embarrassingly admitted that operation was unsuccessful and top militant commanders managed to gave them a slip.
At the end of it all the forces left the area with several unanswered questions.
