New Delhi: It has stopped raining in Mumbai and the rainwater has started receding after manholes were opened to let water drain away.
However, poor drainage was highlighted as a big problem on Tuesday morning. When sections of the city were waterlogged, some 200 pumps were used to drain out that water.
Worli, Chembur, Ghatkopar and Vikhroli were among the worst affected areas. Municipal schools were closed and private schools asked to send students home. Rail tracks were also submerged, trains and flights disrupted and buses diverted on some routes.
The death toll after the monsoon seems to be rising. Two more deaths due to monsoon-related ailments were reported in the city on Tuesday, civic authorities said, taking the toll to 37 since June 1.
A 55-year-old man died due to fever at the King Edward Memorial Hospital, they said.
The deceased, a resident of suburban Malad, had been admitted at the civic-run hospital on Jun 26 but succumbed to the disease on Monday.
Another death due to gastroenteritis was reported at the Nair Hospital in Central Mumbai with a girl succumbing to the illness. She was a resident of Reay Road in South Mumbai, they added.
