Poor infrastructure pegs back Indian archers

New Delhi: The emergence of Deepika Kumari has brought with itself a dramatic revival in the fortunes for Indian archery. But despite a bagful of medals and a jump in rankings are the Indian archers aiming in the dark?

Deepika was feted on her return home to Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, for winning gold at the Youth World Championship in the cadet recurve women section at the 11th Youth World Archery Championship in Ogden (Utah), United States.

The young archer has once again highlighted India's talent in the sport.

It was very nice. It was the first time that I went so far from home. I was very happy after winning the gold medal," said Deepika.

Indian archers have bagged seven gold, five silver and six bronze medals so far this year. Their consistent show has taken India to the second spot on the world rankings.

But the men who run the sport in India aren't too happy. With the Commonwealth Games less than a year away they are concerned about the state of infrastructure.

"It is a pity that our Indian team won't get the benefit of the home ground or the home stadiums because their competition will be quite late," said Archery Association of India President Vijay Kumar Malhotra.

With the Asian and World Championship up ahead this year, expect the competition to get even more intense with only 12 spots up for grabs for the Commonwealth Games next year.ready to on the world
