Chennai: A group of underprivileged children from Chennai’s Krishnagiri district are making documentary films to reach out to the people to voice their aspirations.
They come from families of weavers, tailors, factory workers and most of them are labourers themselves but the children have their priorities set right. They aim to be teachers, doctors, collectors, computer engineers and filmmakers when they grow up.
“Today's media focuses only on glamour songs and movies. It would be better if they do educational programmes that will inspire children and build their confidence,” a student, Shalini said.
“If you stop telecasting serials, things will change for the better. The serials only show crying scenes and carry it one for years together,” another student, Shyam added.
A project, Eastside story, launched by UNICEF and an NGO Nalandaway, gave an opportunity to the children to produce their own short documentary films. Through these films the kids could reach out to society and tell their stories. The impact was rather hard hitting.
“There are many children who after seeing these movies have gone back to school. There are many parents who have had a rethink on how to bring up children,” officer-in-charge, UNICEF, Thomas George said.
The director of the films, Pavai Navalingam, said, “Kalvettu was screened in 50 - 60 villages. All the children wanted to get to school after seeing the film. That is the success of this endeavor.”
