Pork industry hit by Swine flu fears

New Delhi: With the Swine flu or Influenza A H1N1 having created quite a stir, most meat eaters who preferred the pork variety are running scared.

The dish has been struck off the menu in many places.

Changing the name of the disease to H1 N1 hasn’t really helped, say many. Popular joints like the Smoke House Grill in the capital, known for their exquisite pork dishes, are being careful.

The Taj Group of hotels is also going the extra mile and keeping pork off your table. Their statement issued to CNN-IBN reads, “As a precaution, and in response to guest sensitivities, our hotels have been instructed to remove pork products such as chops and spare ribs from buffet displays. Processed items like sausage and salami are still being served.”

The shops selling pork now battle a drop in sales. Even north eastern India, one of the largest pork consuming regions in the country, witnesses a drop in sales, even in havens like Mizoram.

Globally so far over 13 countries have banned pork imports from US, despite WHO saying that pork is safe to eat if cooked well.
